The Experience

I didn’t expect the smell of orange blossoms to hit me before we’d even tried a drop of wine. Our guide, João, grinned when I pointed it out — he said it’s just “spring in Algarve.” The first vineyard was all soft hills and rows of vines with these old cork trees scattered around. We wandered between barrels while João explained how his family’s been growing grapes here since the 1800s. I kept touching the rough bark on the barrels — not sure why, but it felt grounding. The wine tasting was relaxed, no pressure to swirl or sniff like a pro (though I tried). Their white had this sharpness that stuck with me even after we left.

The second stop felt different — smaller, almost hidden at the edge of the Monchique mountains. It’s run by a Portuguese-French couple who met in Bordeaux (hearing them bicker gently over which vintage was best made me laugh). We tasted three more wines there; honestly, by the third glass my notes got messy. There was this moment where the afternoon light came through the window and everything felt golden — maybe it was just the wine talking? Anyway, João told us about how they started from scratch here, planting every vine themselves. I can’t imagine that kind of patience.

The drive up to Mount Fóia wound through Monchique town — pastel houses and kids playing football in dusty alleys. At the top, wind whipped past us and you could see all the way to the ocean. Dinner (or lunch, you pick when booking) was at this restaurant perched right on the edge; I still think about that view sometimes. The food was rich and salty — grilled fish for me, lamb stew for my friend — and somehow everything tasted better with that endless sky outside. There’s something about eating with your hands cold from mountain air that makes you feel alive, you know?
