Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Silves and Monchique Mountains

  • Visit Silves Castle
  • Ascend Monchique Mountains
  • Reach Mount Fóia summit
  • Visit magnificent beaches
  • Explore Sagres and Cape St. Vincent

We rolled into Silves just as the sun started to warm the old red stones—there’s something about that castle, perched up there, that makes you want to climb every uneven step. Our guide, João, pointed out little details I’d never have noticed (like the way the orange trees lean toward the river). I wandered off down a side street and got lost for a minute—just long enough to smell bread baking somewhere behind a blue door. I didn’t go inside, but now I wish I had.

The drive up into the Monchique Mountains was all switchbacks and eucalyptus scent—sort of sharp and sweet at the same time. Caldas de Monchique is tiny but feels like it’s holding its breath; steam curling from springs, locals sipping coffee outside in sweaters even though it wasn’t cold. João told us stories about old spa cures—he swears by them—and then we kept climbing until suddenly we were at Fóia, 902 meters up. The wind up there could knock your hat off if you’re not careful. We just stood there for a while in silence, looking out where green hills turn to sea haze.

Lunch in Marmelete was simple—grilled fish and potatoes, nothing fancy but so good after all that mountain air. The woman running the place asked where we were from and laughed when my Portuguese fell apart (I tried). After that, we crossed more countryside than I expected before João pulled over at Costa Vicentina for some beach time. The Atlantic here is loud—waves smashing rocks below—and the light does this thing where everything looks sharper somehow.

Cape St. Vincent felt like standing at the end of something big—the wind is wild and salty, and the lighthouse looks almost fragile on those cliffs. Sagres was quieter than I thought it’d be; just fishermen mending nets and kids chasing each other near boats. On the drive back I kept thinking about that view from Fóia—still can’t get it out of my head.
