Paddle into caves carved by the Atlantic, then beach on one of Portugal's clearest-water strands.

A 3-hour guided kayak tour along the Sesimbra coast, departing from Lisbon or meeting at the Kayak and Outdoor Centre in Sesimbra's harbour. You paddle 6–10 kilometers through the Arrabida Nature Park, exploring sea cliffs, caves and tunnels before reaching Ribeira do Cavalo beach. A professional guide provides all gear and leads the route; snacks and water are included. Pickup from central Lisbon crosses the Tagus River and the 25th of April bridge on the way to Sesimbra, or you can meet the group at the centre itself. The tour runs in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French.

The Experience

Arrabida Nature Park's coastline is built for kayaking: the cliffs rise sheer from the water, and the caves puncture them at sea level. A professional guide handles the route and the geology—you'll learn about the Luiz de Saldanha Maritime Reserve as you paddle—while the gear (kayak, paddle, life jacket) is waiting at the centre. The paddle covers 6–10 kilometers depending on conditions and the group's pace, so it is not a race.

Ribeira do Cavalo is the main stop, a beach tucked into a cove with water so clear the sand shows through it. The route gets you there by water instead of the hiking trail, and you can linger or push further along the coast to smaller, quieter beaches if the group wants to. Snacks and water come with you; souvenir photos are available for purchase if you want them.

Pickup from central Lisbon means crossing the Tagus and the 25th of April bridge to reach Sesimbra—about an hour's drive. If that doesn't suit you, meet the group at the Kayak and Outdoor Centre in Sesimbra's harbour instead. The tour runs in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French, and specialized infant seats are available if you're bringing young children. Weather can cancel the tour, but the operator offers an alternative date or a different activity (mountain bike or hiking) if that happens.

What’s included

  • All kayaking gear (kayak, paddle and life jacket).
  • a professional guide leading the route and explaining the natural geology of the area.

Is this one for you?Choose the Lisbon pickup if you want the drive handled and the full day organized from your hotel; book without pickup if you're staying in Sesimbra or prefer to drive yourself. Either way, the 3-hour paddle and the beach stop stay the same—the choice is only about how you reach the water.

Top questions

Can I kayak this tour if I've never paddled before?

The Sesimbra Discovery is suitable for all physical fitness levels, and a professional guide leads the whole route. You don't need experience—the guide handles instruction and pacing, and all gear is provided and fitted to you.

What is Ribeira do Cavalo beach like?

Ribeira do Cavalo is one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal, tucked into a cove with crystal-clear water and backed by cliffs. You reach it by kayak, and it's the main stop where the group lands and spends time on the sand.

How far is the paddle from Lisbon?

Lisbon pickup takes about an hour to reach Sesimbra, crossing the Tagus River and the 25th of April bridge. Once you're at the water, the kayak paddle itself covers 6–10 kilometers along the coast.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The tour is subject to favorable weather conditions. If poor weather forces a cancellation, the operator offers either an alternative date or a different activity—mountain bike or hiking—so you don't lose your booking.

Are children allowed on this kayak tour?

Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Specialized infant seats are available, so even young children can come along on the water.

What's included in the price?

The tour includes a professional guide, all kayaking gear (kayak, paddle, life jacket), snacks and water. Pickup from central Lisbon is included in one option; the other option requires you to meet the group at the Kayak and Outdoor Centre in Sesimbra's harbour.
