Step-by-step itinerary

Coasteering adventure in Arrabida Park

  • Progress along coastline
  • Scramble and climb rocks
  • Swim in natural waters
  • Rappel down cliffs
  • Zip-line over water
  • Cliff jump into water

The Experience

The boat leaves the beach at Sesimbra and heads toward the Arrabida cliffs, where the coastline turns into a vertical playground. You're fitted with a wetsuit, helmet, life jacket and harness on shore, then the real work begins — a progression that moves you along the rock face through scrambling, swimming, climbing and rappelling. Vertente Natural pioneered coasteering in Portugal and has been running this route for years, so the sequence is tight and the safety setup is serious.

What makes this different from a standard rock climb is the water. You're not ascending a wall and descending the same way — you're moving laterally along the coast, sometimes on rock, sometimes in the sea, sometimes suspended from a rope. The zip-line carries you out over the water and drops you into it. The cliff jumps are optional but most people do them once they see how far down it really is. A support boat stays with the group the whole time, and your guide reads the conditions constantly because the activity shuts down if the weather turns.

You need to be a confident swimmer — that's the only hard requirement. Moderate fitness helps because you're pulling yourself up, over and through rock for hours, but it's not a mountaineering expedition. Children over 12 can join if an adult is with them. The whole thing runs about half a day, and you leave knowing exactly why Vertente Natural has the reputation they do in this sport.

What’s included

  • Your day includes a wetsuit, life jacket, helmet, harness, support boat and insurance.
  • The guide leads the progression along the coast, managing all rope and zip-line systems.
  • You bring your own swimwear and a towel.

Is this one for you?Book this if you're a strong swimmer who wants to move along a coastline instead of up a wall, and you'd rather have a guide and a support boat manage the ropes and timing than figure it out yourself. The half-day format fits a long weekend without eating your whole day.
