The experience
You start the day with a jeep ride up into Serra da Lousã, a mountain range where villages built from local schist stone cling to the slopes. The morning takes you past Candal, Talasnal and Gondramaz: three of the region's most intact schist villages, each one a cluster of stone structures that date back to medieval times. The villages sit where they do because of the land itself: the slopes offered pastoral and agricultural space, and the schist stone was there to build with. You'll see the Witchyard and Arouce Castle overlooking the river pool of Sra da Piedade, and stop at Aldeia do Xisto, one of the most iconic schist villages in Portugal, set halfway up the slopes among chestnut trees and water lines.
After coffee or tea, the afternoon shifts to walking. A 6 km trail of intermediate difficulty takes you along some of the mountain's most beautiful paths, moving through the landscape at a pace that lets you take in the terrain and the views. Walking sticks are provided. The route is designed for travelers with a moderate level of fitness. The afternoon walk is the more demanding part of the day, but it is the way to move through the mountain itself rather than just passing through it.
Pickup happens from your accommodation in Coimbra or the Lousã area, and you return by around 7 p.m. A qualified guide leads throughout in either English or Portuguese. The tour includes photos taken during the day, personal accident and liability insurance, and transportation for the full route.
