Serra da Lousã: Wildlife & Hiking Tour: Deer in the wild
Can you really watch wild deer behave naturally in a Portuguese forest?
You ride into Lousa Mountain's forests by 4x4, then hike on foot to spot wild deer, boars and foxes in their habitat. The tour includes visits to restored and abandoned shale villages, binoculars for wildlife viewing, and a professional photographer guide who gives you a souvenir photo. Hotel pickup from Coimbra is included, and the whole day takes four hours with a maximum group of ten people.

The Experience
Our guide Paulo stopped the 4x4 halfway up the ridge and just listened. No talking. After maybe thirty seconds he pointed — a small group of deer moving between the pines, maybe eighty meters off. That's the thing about this tour: you're not watching animals in a pen. You're in their space, on Lousa Mountain, and the guide knows where they actually are. The four-hour day mixes 4x4 driving through forest roads with sections on foot, so you're not stuck in a vehicle the whole time. You walk between chestnut and beech trees, and the guide carries binoculars for everyone. Wild boars, foxes, squirrels — they show up or they don't, depending on the season and the light.
The villages are the other half of it. Gondramaz is a restored shale settlement with about fifty stone houses, and you stop there for coffee. The two Cadaval villages — Cimeiro and Fundeiro — burned in the 1980s and stayed abandoned for years. Now they're being brought back, and you hike between them on the same trails locals used. It's not a museum walk; it's more like following the geography of how people lived up here. The guide is a photographer, so he knows the light and the angles, and you get a souvenir photo at the end. Hotel pickup from Coimbra is included if you book that option, so you don't arrange your own transport up the mountain.
Weather doesn't stop it — the tour runs rain or shine, so bring a jacket that works. Groups stay under ten people, which means you're not herding through the forest with thirty others. If you want lunch or dinner, you can order it on site and pay separately; it's not bundled in. The whole thing is built around watching animals behave naturally, not performing for a camera, so patience and decent shoes matter more than fitness level.
