The Experience

You arrive in Sagres with a free afternoon or a morning to fill, and the instructor meets you to assess what you already know—or confirms you've never stood on a board. The lesson runs two sessions of roughly 90 minutes each, with the beach picked based on that day's conditions: tide, swell direction, wind. That flexibility is the whole point. A fixed 10am start works for calm water and tourists; Wavesensations calls you in advance if the best waves are running at a different hour, or if the spot needs to shift down the coast.

You get a wetsuit, board and all the gear; the instructor handles transport to whichever beach has the day's best teaching conditions. Sports insurance covers you. The two lessons build on each other—the first gets you paddling and standing; the second refines your pop-up and balance in moving water. A snack is not included, so bring or buy one before you start.
