The experience

You meet your guide at the Portuguese Centre of Photography and climb into a tuk tuk for a route that moves between Porto's dense historic core and the Douro estuary where the river meets the ocean. The tuk tuk is built for the city's narrow streets and steep hills (places a regular car can't navigate), so you reach viewpoints and neighborhoods a bus tour skips. Batalha Square, the Fontainhas Viewpoint, and the gardens around the Palácio de Cristal are stops that show you how Porto sits between river and ridge.

The Dom Luis I Bridge appears twice on this route: once from the city side, where you see Gustave Eiffel's double-deck iron span built between 1881 and 1886, and again from the water side as you head toward Afurada. The Palace of the Stock Exchange, with its Tuscan and neoclassical façade started in 1842, sits in the historic quarter. Then the route turns toward the coast. Afurada Fishing Village has cobblestoned streets and tiled houses that belong to a different Porto. One where the work is still visible in the architecture. You stop at Lavadores beach for a break before the tuk tuk turns back toward the city.
