You arrive in Porto and start with a city briefing at the Portuguese Centre of Photography, getting oriented to the architecture and local traditions before the ride begins. The next morning you leave Porto heading north toward Esposende—a 60-kilometer stretch that hugs the coast and passes through fishing villages like Póvoa de Varzim, where you see how the old Portuguese Discoveries shaped these towns. The terrain stays flat, and the route mixes bike lanes, wood walkways and smooth dirt roads, so the first days build rhythm without strain.

Day three takes you to Caminha, a green town on the Minho river where Portugal meets Spain. Day four crosses into Spanish territory and ends in Bayona, a medieval city that grew from Roman foundations and still carries the marks of a sixteenth-century raid by Francis Drake. The fifth day is the longest—64 kilometers through Arcade, famous for oysters harvested in the local waters, and past the twelfth-century Santiago church. If you're cycling in early April, the Fiesta de la Ostra fills the streets with pilgrims and tourists. By day six, you're in Caldas de Reis, a pre-Roman spa town that became a pilgrimage waypoint itself. The final 40 kilometers lead to Santiago de Compostela and the Square of Obradoiro, where the baroque cathedral holds the remains of the apostle.

The terrain shifts on days four through seven—hillier, with ups and downs on secondary roads—but nothing like the mountain passes of the inland Camino routes. You carry water, cycle early in summer heat, and manage a moderate fitness level. Luggage moves ahead each day, so you ride with only what you need.
