The Experience

How do you cover 493 km of Portugal's coast without arranging transport, finding hotels, or figuring out which roads are rideable? This tour strings together 13 days of cycling from Porto south to Lisbon, with the bike, the bed, and the route already set. You start in Porto with a city tour, cross the iconic Don Luis I bridge into Vila Nova de Gaia to see the wine cellars, then head toward the coast. The first stretch to Furadouro is 47 km—you'll pass the chapel of Senhor da Pedra at Miramar Beach and stop in Espinho for traditional fish dishes at lunch.

The middle days push through smaller towns and natural reserves. Aveiro, known as the little Venice of Portugal, sits at the end of a 45 km ride through fishing villages and the S. Jacinto nature reserve; you cross by ferry boat and tour the Ria de Aveiro by boat once you arrive. From there the route passes through Costa Nova do Prado with its distinctive haystack houses painted in vertical colored bands, then follows pine forests and dunes toward Figueira da Foz. By day seven, you're cycling into Nazaré, a shorter 29 km ride that ends at a town built on cliffs overlooking the Atlantic—this is where the submarine canyon known as the Cannon of Nazaré creates waves large enough that surfers from around the world come to ride them. The next day takes you inland to Obidos, a medieval walled town with narrow cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses, then back to the coast at Peniche, a rocky peninsula popular with surfers and windsurfers.

The final stretch turns toward Lisbon. You cycle through Ericeira, a fishing village and surf destination, then leave the coast for Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with 19th-century Romantic architecture, royal estates, and the Pena National Palace. The last ride to Cascais is 40 km through the Sintra-Cascais Nature Park, passing cliffs and beaches before you reach this former royal resort town. From there, a short transfer takes you into Lisbon. Accommodation ranges from 4-star hotels (Porto Trindade, Furadouro Hotel, Moliceiro in Aveiro) to 5-star options in the premium package; your bike is included throughout, and a guide who speaks English, Spanish, or Portuguese travels with the group.

Is this one for you?The tour departs from Porto and ends in Lisbon, so you'll need to arrange your own arrival in Porto and departure from Lisbon—book a flight into Porto and out of Lisbon, or plan ground transport to meet the first day. If you're staying elsewhere in northern Portugal or arriving by train, the Porto start point is fixed, so confirm your travel plan before booking. The 13-day length means you commit to the full route; there's no option to shorten it or join partway through.

Top questions

What's the riding like on this tour—are there big climbs or mostly flat sections?

The Porto to Lisbon tour mixes flat terrain with moderate climbs on scenic bike paths along the coast and through inland stretches. Most days follow established routes through villages and natural reserves rather than mountain passes, so the focus stays on distance and scenery rather than steep elevation gain.

Do I need to bring my own bike, or is one provided?

A bike is included with the tour, so you don't need to travel with one or arrange a rental separately. It's ready for you when you arrive in Porto.

What exactly is the Cannon of Nazaré, and why is it famous?

The Cannon of Nazaré is a submarine gorge—the largest submerged canyon in Europe, about 170 kilometres along the coast and 5,000 metres deep. This underwater geography creates the conditions for giant, perfect waves; Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara brought it worldwide attention in 2011 when he rode what was then the world's biggest wave there.

Can children come on this tour?

Yes, children are welcome from age 1. Specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with very young riders.

How does the tour handle the ferry crossing to Aveiro?

On the ride from Furadouro to Aveiro (45 km), you cross to the city via ferry boat. The ferry is part of the route and is included in the tour logistics.

What's included in the premium accommodation option?

The premium option upgrades you to 5-star hotels at select stops: Porto Infante Sagres Hotel in Porto, Hotel Solverde Spa & Wellness Center in Furadouro, MS Collection Aveiro in Aveiro, Hotel real de Óbidos in Obidos, MH Peniche in Peniche, and Hotel Cidadela Cascais in Cascais, among others.
