The Experience

The tour starts at the shop and heads into Praça da Batalha, where you'll pass the statue of D. Pedro V and the São João National Theatre before climbing toward the Guindais Funicular and the old Fernandinas city walls. The e-bike handles the steep grades that would exhaust a regular bike, so the climbs become part of the route instead of a barrier to it. From there you cross the Infante Bridge and ride along the Douro River toward Serra do Pilar Monastery, then approach the Dom Luís Bridge—the double-deck iron span that defines Porto's skyline—and descend to the Gaia riverside on the south bank.

On the Gaia side you'll see the Sandeman cellars with their flood marks still visible on the façade, the Church of Santa Marinha, and the market that sits between the wine trade and the water. The route then loops back across the city, passing Casa do Infante and the Stock Exchange Palace before reaching the Church of São Francisco. You'll ride the Porto waterfront through Miragaia and past the Customs House, then head west toward the mouth of the Douro—Passeio Alegre gardens, the Fort of São João da Foz, and the beaches that line the coast. The final stretch takes you inland along Avenida da Boavista, Porto's longest avenue, to Casa da Música and the Boavista Roundabout, then through Crystal Palace Gardens with views over the river before returning via Cordoaria Garden, Clérigos Tower and back to São Bento station.

A guide leads the group in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French and offers advice on where to eat and what to do in Porto, the Douro Valley and northern Portugal beyond the tour itself. Snacks are included, and the e-bike rental is part of the price. You'll need to be comfortable riding an e-bike and have at least moderate fitness; the tour is not suitable for pregnant travelers or those with spinal or cardiovascular conditions. Children can join from age 13.

Operated by Turismo das Flores

Is this one for you?The e-bike motor means you can climb Porto's steep streets without walking, so the full city—from the riverside to the outlying neighborhoods—stays within reach in a single morning or afternoon. If you have moderate fitness and know how to ride, three hours on two wheels covers more ground than walking would, and the stops at São Bento, Dom Luís Bridge, Gaia and Crystal Palace Gardens hold together as a coherent route instead of scattered points.

Top questions

What is the Dom Luís Bridge and why does the tour spend time there?

The Dom Luís Bridge is the iconic two-deck iron bridge that spans the Douro River and connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia on the south bank. The tour approaches it from both sides—crossing the upper deck and descending to the riverside below—so you see how it anchors the city's geography and the relationship between the two banks.

Can I do this tour if I've never ridden an e-bike before?

You need to know how to ride an e-bike already; the tour does not include instruction on how to operate one. If you're comfortable on a regular bike, an e-bike is straightforward, but you should have some cycling experience.

How steep are the hills, and will the e-bike handle them?

Porto has significant elevation changes, especially in the city center and toward the Guindais Funicular. The e-bike motor handles the climbs, so steep grades become rideable rather than walk-able, but you need at least moderate fitness to sustain three hours of riding.

What neighborhoods and landmarks do I actually see on this route?

The tour covers the city center (São Bento station, Clérigos Tower, Casa da Música), the riverside (Dom Luís Bridge, Gaia cellars, the Douro mouth), and outlying areas (Crystal Palace Gardens, Castelo do Queijo, Matosinhos beach, Boavista Roundabout). You'll pass churches, markets, gardens and the old city walls, riding roughly 15 kilometers across the city.

Is there time to stop and look around, or is it mostly riding?

The tour is three hours total, so the pace includes both riding and stops at key landmarks. The guide offers hospitality and advice throughout, but this is a moving tour rather than a stationary one—you're covering a lot of ground on the e-bike.

What's included in the price, and what do I need to bring?

The e-bike rental, snacks and the guide are included. All fees and taxes are covered. You'll need to bring water and wear comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for cycling; the tour operates in most weather, so check conditions before you ride.
