The Experience
The tour leaves from Porto's heart and heads straight to São Bento Railway Station, one of the world's most beautiful stations, then moves to Porto Cathedral, a Gothic structure from the 12th century that anchors the old city. From there you cross the Dom Luís I Bridge—designed by Gustave Eiffel's engineer—and ride to a viewpoint with panoramic views before dropping down to Cais de Gaia, the riverside terrace district on the opposite bank. The electric motor handles the climbs back up into the historic center, which is where a walking tour would start to drag.
The route threads through Praça da Batalha, past the Bolhão Market (a municipal landmark that has operated for over a century), and along Avenida dos Aliados, Porto's main avenue. You'll see the Carmo Convent, built in the 18th century on a narrow lot between two churches, and the Torre dos Clérigos, the city's postcard landmark. The guide takes you to the Miradouro da Vitória, a viewpoint in the old Jewish quarter where King João I once confined the city's Jewish population behind walls, and can finish at the Passeio das Virtudes garden overlooking the Douro or the Palácio de Cristal Gardens if the light holds. Lunch is on your own at restaurants along the way, but the pace leaves time to stop.
You'll need a moderate level of fitness—the bike is electric, but you're still riding uphill through a hilly city for three hours. The operator notes that spinal injuries and poor cardiovascular health are reasons to skip this one. Service animals are welcome on the tour.
