The experience
What makes this different from a standard island tour is that you're driving the whole time. The buggy handles rocky terrain and unpaved paths that a regular car can't reach, so you get access to places like Pico Castelo, the dunas, and Vigia da Baleia that sit off the main roads. A guide leads the group and explains the island's history and landscape as you go, but the route and the pace depend on you at the controls.
The three-hour loop covers eight stops: Mirador da Portela, Pico Castelo, Dunas, Quinta das Palmeiras, Pico Ana Ferreira, Miradores dos Morenos, Vigia da Baleia and Mirador das Flores. Each one is a viewpoint or landmark you drive to, get out and explore briefly, then move on. The guide gives you a safety briefing before you start and provides protective goggles for the ride. You'll need a valid driver's license, and the buggy does the work on steep or technical sections. It's built to handle the terrain safely.
You pick your buggy size when you book: a two-seat model if it's just you and one other person, or a four-seat if your group is larger. Either way, the same guide leads the same route and the same stops fit into the same three hours. Infants can sit on an adult's lap, and specialized infant seats are available if you need one. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese or Italian.

Is this one for you?Choose this if you want to be behind the wheel the whole time rather than watching from a passenger seat: the buggy and the rocky terrain mean you reach viewpoints and trails a regular tour vehicle can't access. A two-seat buggy works for a couple. A four-seat fits a small family or group of friends.
