The experience

You arrive on Porto Santo with a free afternoon or a morning to spare, and you want to see the whole island without driving yourself or joining a packed minibus. The UMM 4x4 is built for this: Portuguese-made, open-sided, with facing seats so you can see across the vehicle and out both directions. Five passengers maximum means the guide can actually talk to you instead of shouting over an engine full of people. You're picked up from wherever suits you (your hotel, a meeting point, anywhere on the island), and the route covers all four corners: the southern beaches and viewpoints, the northernmost tip at Forado Norte with its exposed volcanic vent, the central sand dunes and high viewpoints, and the northwestern cliffs overlooking the nine-kilometer golden beach.

The tour runs four hours at a leisurely pace, with many stops for photographs and short walks. You'll see the Calheta beach or the Miradouro das Flores in the south; the Organ Pipes rock formation shaped by nature and human quarrying; the Fonte da Areia sand dunes and viewpoints; Pedregal and Pico Cabrito as you circle the island's highest mountain; and depending on tide and weather, either rock pools near Ilheu de Cima or a drive right to the shore. The guide speaks English or Portuguese and shares stories about the people, history and geography that have shaped the island, not just a list of names. Easy off-roading on good tracks means you're not bouncing over rough ground. The vehicle does the work, and you stay comfortable enough to absorb what you're seeing.

Drop-off is flexible: wherever you need to be next. Insurance is included, and children from age 12 are welcome (younger children need to be over 135 cm tall). If your group is larger than five, email ahead to arrange a second vehicle or confirm what works for your party.
