The experience
Ribeira da Pena cuts through a steep valley so narrow and rocky that the riverbed is almost unreachable on foot, which is exactly why you descend it by rope. The canyon floor holds countless waterfalls, deep lagoons and boulders stacked like a maze. You start at the top with a 35-meter rappel that lowers you straight into the river. From there, the route follows the water itself, moving upriver and downstream as the canyon dictates. Most of the day you're either in the water or on the rocks beside it, jumping between stone platforms, sliding down natural water chutes, and climbing over obstacles the river has carved.
The operator equips you with a neoprene suit, neoprene socks, helmet and harness before you start, so cold water and scrapes are managed. Around a dozen jumps dot the route at different heights (some are 2 meters, others reach 15 meters), and each one is optional. You choose which ones to take. Water toboggans (called Tubogãs locally) let you slide down smooth rock faces up to 4 meters high. The entire progression stays with the river, so there's no scrambling through brush or hiking between distant sites. You move through the canyon itself. A guide leads the group through the sequence and manages the rappelling setup.
The exit is a 30-minute walk uphill to the village of Ribeira Cimeira, where the day ends. Spring through autumn (April to October) is the recommended season. Water levels and weather determine whether the initial 35-meter rappel runs on any given day.
