The Experience

I nearly missed the start because I was busy staring at a pastry shop window — those pastel de nata really do call your name in Porto. Our guide, Joana, just grinned and waved me over like she’d seen it all before. We set off through the city center, the air still carrying that morning coffee smell from cafés on Santa Catarina Street. It’s funny how quickly you settle into a new place when someone local is showing you around. She pointed out Majestic Café — apparently it’s where writers used to argue about politics (and probably pastries too).

The real “oh wow” moment hit at São Bento Railway Station. I’d seen photos of those blue-and-white tiles but standing there… well, it’s different. There’s this hush when you walk in, even with people coming and going, like everyone knows they’re standing inside a storybook. Joana explained some of the scenes — kings, battles, everyday life — and I tried to guess what was happening in one of them but got it totally wrong (she laughed). From there we wandered up to the Sé Cathedral; the stone felt cool under my hand and the view over the Douro River made me stop talking for a second.

We didn’t go inside Livraria Lello (the queue was wild), but Joana gave us this whole backstory outside about JK Rowling living here and how the staircase inspired her writing Harry Potter. I’m not even a big fan but now I kind of want to read them again. The street outside was packed with students in black capes — apparently that’s normal here? Felt like Hogwarts had spilled out onto Porto’s sidewalks.

The last part was across the river in Gaia for a Port wine tasting. The cellar smelled like oak barrels and something sweet I couldn’t quite place (maybe raisins?). The tasting itself wasn’t private — we joined a small group — but our local host poured generously and told stories about his grandfather working harvests along the Douro. I’ll be honest: Port wine is stronger than I expected. Walking back out into the sunlight after that was… interesting. Still thinking about that view over Ribeira though, all those colors stacked above the river like someone spilled a box of crayons.
