The Experience

I didn’t think I’d care that much about port wine — honestly, it always sounded like something my grandfather would drink after dinner. But there I was, right across from Palácio da Bolsa on Rua Mouzinho da Silveira, feeling a little out of place until our host Rui waved us in with this big grin. The room smelled faintly sweet, almost like raisins left in the sun, and there were already glasses lined up on the table. Five of them. It looked serious.

Rui started talking about the history of port wine in Porto — how it’s tangled up with British merchants and riverboats and these old cellars that still line the Douro. I kept glancing at the bottles: two whites (which surprised me), a tawny, a ruby, and something called LBV that sounded fancier than I expected for a “day trip port wine tasting Porto” kind of thing. He poured each one slowly and paired them with local cheeses and these salty little nuts. The white port was crisp and almost floral — I never thought I’d say that about something called “port.”

There was this moment when Rui tried to get us to pronounce “vinho do Porto” properly — he laughed when I gave it my best shot (I’m not even going to try spelling what came out of my mouth).
