The Experience

Óbidos Lagoon is a tidal estuary where the route changes with the water. You paddle through islands and sandbars that shift seasonally, guided by someone who reads the lagoon's rhythms and knows where the birds nest, where seaweed grows edible, and which banks hold shellfish. The tour is not a lap of a fixed circuit—it is an expedition shaped by what the tide and conditions allow on the day you go. If conditions permit, your guide teaches you how to catch shellfish using methods locals have used for centuries, then release them back. If the tide is wrong for that, the route opens up other possibilities instead.

You paddle in a stable kayak or SUP board with a certified guide (or two guides if the group is larger), starting and ending at Foz do Arelho beach. The certified kayak instructor and Intertidal-certified local guide handle safety and navigation; you handle the paddle and the attention. Birdwatching, marine life identification and spotting edible plants along the banks are woven through the paddle, not added on—your guide points them out as you pass. Families bring children from age 4 onward; toddlers and small children fit in triple kayaks designed for them. Dogs are welcome too. The whole outing, including paddling time and any walking along the banks, runs between two and three hours.

All kayaks come with paddles, seats and buoyancy aids. Insurance is included. The guides speak English, Spanish, Portuguese and French. If you have mobility needs or want to explore by para-canoeing, arrange that before you book. Public transport reaches Foz do Arelho, though you'll need to arrange your own way there and back from wherever you're staying.
