The Experience

“You see that tower? My grandfather used to say it guarded the dreams of sailors,” said João, our guide, as we squinted at Belém Tower through a tangle of selfie sticks and seagulls. The air by the river was salty and just a bit sweet — maybe from the pastéis de nata someone was eating nearby. I’d read about Lisbon’s Age of Discovery, but João made it feel less like a textbook and more like a half-remembered family story. We wandered past the Monument to the Discoveries and Jerónimos Monastery, sunlight bouncing off white stone so bright I had to shade my eyes. João pointed out tiny details in the carvings — faces, ropes, even what looked like a rhino (he swore it was real). I still think about that rhino sometimes.

After Belem, we rolled into central Lisbon — Praça do Comércio wide open to the river, then Rossio Square where pigeons outnumbered tourists for once. There’s something about those black-and-white tiles underfoot that makes you walk slower. At one point we squeezed into Alfama’s narrow streets (I almost lost the group when I stopped for a photo of laundry flapping above us) and João just laughed: “If you get lost here, follow the music or the smell of grilled sardines.” We ducked into Lisbon Cathedral for a moment of cool silence. It felt old in a way you can’t fake — walls thick enough to hold centuries of prayers and gossip.

The afternoon felt different — lighter somehow. We crossed over to Parque das Nações, past glassy buildings and kids racing scooters along the Tejo River. The Vasco da Gama Bridge stretched forever in both directions; I didn’t expect to be impressed by a bridge but there it was, slicing across the sky. Our small group drifted apart for a while at the Oceanarium (I got distracted by jellyfish), then met up again by Vasco da Gama Tower where wind tugged at everyone’s hair. Someone asked João if Expo ‘98 really changed this part of Lisbon or if it just looks new — he shrugged and said, “Depends who you ask.”
