The experience

The tour opens at Edward VII Park, a formal garden built in honor of the English king, then moves through the city's layered history: Lisbon Cathedral, which began construction in 1147 on the site of a former Muslim mosque; the baroque architecture of Campo de Ourique Market; and Alfama, the bohemian neighborhood where Fado supposedly began, where you can stop for ginjinha. The guide is a resident with a passion for Lisbon's past and explains how Romans, Moors, Christians and Jews have all left their mark on the city.

Two viewpoints anchor the second half. Portas do Sol is a large balcony with a view across the Tagus. Senhora do Monte sits at the highest point in Lisbon, overlooking São Jorge Castle and the old city below. From there the route descends to Commerce Square, where the Royal Palace stood before the 1755 earthquake, now ringed by 18th and 19th century buildings, and Marquis of Pombal Square, a monument to the man who led Lisbon's reconstruction. The tour ends at Rossio Square in the center, with its statue of Pedro IV.

The whole route takes just over an hour and a half. You travel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water and WiFi on board. The guide speaks your choice of English, Spanish or Portuguese throughout.
