Lisbon boat tour: Bird watching in Tejo Nature Reserve
Watch flamingos and ospreys from the boat as the estuary reveals itself
A guided boat tour through the Tejo Nature Reserve near Lisbon, where you spot over 200 bird species across a 14,000-hectare estuary. The three-hour trip passes through the Bird Fishermen's Community, under the Vasco da Gama Bridge, and into the reserve's main channels where herons, spoonbills, avocets and kites live year-round or pass through on migration. Your guide Carlos Cera leads the tour in English, Spanish or Portuguese.

The experience
The boat leaves from the starting location and heads into the Tejo estuary after a safety briefing. You'll pass under the Vasco da Gama Bridge and cruise past the Bird Fishermen's Community, where the guide points out how the landscape and water patterns shape which species you're likely to see. Binoculars come with you, and there are photo stops built into the route so you can capture what appears.
The core of the tour is two and a half hours of birdwatching in the reserve itself. The estuary holds more than 200 species (flamingos, ospreys, spoonbills, avocets, plovers, kites, herons and ibis among the most visible), and whether you see them depends on the season and the tides. The guide knows where to look and what to listen for. You're on the water the whole time, which means you get closer to the birds than you would from shore, and the boat's pace lets you linger when something worth watching appears.
Life jackets and personal accident insurance are included. The tour suits all fitness levels. Infants sit on an adult's lap. A guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese depending on the group. Tips are optional.
