The experience
You start in Lagos, where the guide explains the city's 2,000-year history, from Celtic settlers through Romans and Moors to the 15th-century golden age when ships departed for Africa. The drive takes you to Ponta da Piedade, the sandstone headland carved by winter storms into sea pillars, rock arches and hidden grottos. From there you head to Sagres, where São Vicente fortress stands on the site of a medieval convent. Inside, the 1904 lighthouse still operates and the cliffs drop 50 meters to the Atlantic.
Lunch is a one-hour break at a typical Portuguese restaurant in Sagres (you pay for your meal separately). Afterward, a walk along the marina and river draws you past the old town, where you can pick up souvenirs. The guide walks you through the landscape that inspired Henry the Navigator to found his school here in the 15th century: a place where he gathered cartographers, astronomers and mariners to pool their knowledge and teach navigation instruments like the sea compass, astrolabe and quadrant. You also enter a simple 15th-century church with a single nave, baptistery and high choir painted in luminous biblical scenes.
The tour runs eight hours total. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a small group. Entry fees to the museum, church and fortress are included, as is parking. Children from age one are welcome, and service animals are allowed. Specialized infant seats are available if you need one.
