The experience
You start at the Carvoeira dam near Penacova and paddle downstream through natural surroundings thick with vegetation and birds. The route is 12km and takes about three and a half hours, moving at a pace that beginners can manage. In summer, small rapids break up the gentler stretches and add some current to the paddle. The landscape stays open and quiet for most of the descent. This is the largest tourist paddling activity in Portugal, but the river is wide enough that the day does not feel crowded.
Around 1pm, you pull the canoe to the riverbank and stop for food. You bring your own lunch from home, and the break gives you time to rest and sit with the water and the birds. After eating, you paddle the remaining distance to Praia Fluvial dos Palheiros in Zorro, where the activity ends. The whole day is built for people new to paddling: no prior experience is needed, and the current and the terrain do not demand fitness beyond what most adults have.

Is this one for you?You paddle the canoe yourself at your own pace down a wide, gentle river. There is no sitting and watching. The shared route means you paddle alongside other groups, but the 12km span and the midday break make it feel unhurried, so this suits anyone wanting to move under their own power without the intensity of a whitewater run.
