The experience
The Ceira River water walk is the first of its kind in Portugal, and it takes you downhill through the Ceira Valley on a route that mixes rock-hopping, swimming and climbing. You'll make more than 10 jumps from rocks ranging from 2 to 8 meters high into deep pools, slide down a chute that Trans Serrano has set into the riverbed, and jump on ropes anchored to the banks. The river itself is the path: you move downstream through dams and over rapids, passing under a spectacular waterfall near the Monte Redondo Hydroelectric Power Station. The final stretch can be done by swimming or on foot, depending on water levels and your choice, and ends at Praia Fluvial da Peneda, a river beach surrounded by forest.
What makes this accessible to everyone is the bank route: if you can't or don't want to jump, slide or swim a section, you walk around it on the path above the water. The neoprene suit, socks, helmet and harness keep you warm and safe in the current. A guide leads the group in English, Spanish or Portuguese, and the organization provides waterproof backpacks for your lunch, though eating something before you start is recommended. You'll likely see trout, otters and birds of the region as you move through the preserved riparian gallery.
Meet at Casa de Campo Vale do Ceira at 9:30 am. Bring water-friendly footwear (water shoes work best), sunscreen, a light snack and water to drink. If you wear prescription glasses, bring a lanyard to keep them secure. The activity runs about 4 to 5 hours from start to finish.
