The experience

The morning started with us missing the turn for the meeting point: Google Maps had no idea about Faial’s tiny roads. Our guide, Ana, just laughed when we finally found her by the van (she said it happens all the time). She handed us cold water and pointed out how you could already smell the sea even this far up. I remember thinking the air felt heavier here, like something was brewing in those clouds over Pico Island.

We wound our way up to Guide Mountain first. The road was so narrow that at one point Ana just shrugged and reversed for a tractor: no stress at all. From the top, Horta looked like a toy city below, and Porto Pim beach glowed pale against all that volcanic black. There was this weird silence up there except for gulls: kind of peaceful but also made me realize how small you feel on an island like Faial.

After that came the Caldeira. It’s massive. I mean, 2 kilometers across and so deep you can’t see the bottom unless you lean way over (not recommended if you’re scared of heights). The Capelinhos volcano site was next, which honestly surprised me. I’d seen pictures but nothing prepares you for how gray everything is: like walking on another planet.
