Monte da Guia, a volcanic cone, opens onto views of Porto Pim beach and the city harbor. Almoxarife itself is the largest volcanic sand beach on Faial, and you have free time there to swim in the temperate Atlantic, walk the shoreline, or sit at a local café.

The route inland takes you through Flamengos parish, the only part of the island surrounded entirely by mountains and volcanoes with no sea access, before you reach Caldeira do Faial at the center. The crater measures roughly two kilometers across, seven kilometers around the rim, and drops 400 meters to the floor — you walk to the edge and stand inside the scale of it. The landscape is bare volcanic rock and sparse vegetation, and the silence is the thing most visitors do not expect. You have time to walk the rim, photograph the depth, or simply stand and look. Lunch follows at a restaurant away from the tourist routes, where the buffet holds traditional Azorean fish and meat dishes, soup, salads and bread; drinks and dessert are separate. If your option excludes lunch, you have an hour to rest or explore while others eat, or if the whole group skips it, the tour ends about an hour earlier.

The afternoon heads west to Capelinhos Volcano, where an eruption in 1957 reshaped the western coast overnight. The landscape there is grey volcanic sand and ash under green mountains and blue sky — travelers often call it lunar. You have free time to visit the Capelinhos Interpretation Centre, walk through the ash fields, see the lighthouse with its first floor still buried underground, or explore Costado da Nau, the edge of the island as it stood before the eruption. On the return, you pass the natural pools at Porto do Comprido, formed where lava cooled in the sea, and the site of a whaling village now mostly buried. The tour typically ends by 16:30, though the schedule is flexible — useful if you need to catch a ferry back to Pico the same evening. In summer, you can swim at Almoxarife if you bring a bathing suit and towel; there is a changing area on the beach, and you must be dry before returning to the vehicle.
