Four Hidden Spots Along the Algarve Cliffs, One Full Day from Faro

You hike four coastal landmarks in a single day from Faro, starting early and finishing by evening. The van handles the 60km each way, entry to the main sites is included, and snorkeling gear is on board if the sea cooperates. Bring your own lunch and water, wear hiking shoes, and plan for a full day of walking and climbing — that's what fits all four treasures into one trip.

6h 20m–6h 30m

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Meet at Faro Train Station
  • Travel to Benagil by van
  • Hike Praia da Marinha cliffs
  • View Benagil Cave from above
  • Visit Algar Seco Carvoeiro caves
  • Explore Senhora da Rocha and Praia Nova
  • Walk through rock tunnel
  • Relax or swim at the beach
  • Return to Faro by van

The Experience

You meet at Faro Train Station at 8:20am, and by 8:30 the van is heading south toward Benagil, about an hour's drive. The first stop is Praia da Marinha — a 50 to 60 minute walk along the clifftop where the rock formations have names: the Bridge, the Heart, the Titanic. These aren't marketing nicknames; locals and guides genuinely call them that, and once you see the shapes carved into the 24-million-year-old stone, you understand why. You'll stop for photos, and the pace is easy to moderate, so it's not a race.

After Marinha, the van takes you to the second treasure: a viewpoint above Benagil Cave itself. You're looking down into a 16-million-year-old cavern that opens directly to the sea, and the light hits the sand floor in a way that makes the whole thing feel less real. Then it's on to Algar Seco near Carvoeiro — a rocky formation with caves and narrow passages carved by seawater, tucked into what's called the seven hanging valleys trail. The third treasure is more intimate; you're walking through actual recesses in the rock, not just looking down from above.

The final stop is Senhora da Rocha and Praia Nova Beach, where a 16th-century chapel sits on the cliff edge and a tunnel runs through the rock connecting the two beaches. If the sea is calm and the weather holds, you get time to swim or snorkel — the tour includes a diving mask, and snorkeling happens only if conditions are safe. Even if you skip the water, the walk through the tunnel and along the beach gives you a real break in the day. The van picks you back up and heads north again, arriving in Faro around 5pm.

Bring water, a light lunch, comfortable hiking shoes and a backpack. If you're planning to swim, pack flip-flops, a swimsuit and a towel. The van has air conditioning and the guide carries an umbrella, so you're covered for sun and unexpected weather. Pets are welcome on the tour, and the guide will point out the best angles for photos at each stop — you're not just walking, you're being shown where to look.
