The Experience

We pushed off from Armacao de Pera just as the late sun was softening—our guide, Joana, handed me a life jacket and grinned, “You’ll want this if you get excited.” The boat felt small against the open Atlantic, but somehow that made it better. I could smell salt and sunscreen and something fried drifting from the beach bars behind us. There were only a handful of us, mostly Portuguese families still sandy from the day. Someone’s kid pointed out a fishing boat bobbing near shore—those boats look like candy, all painted stripes and chipped names.

The first surprise was how close everything felt: cliffs rising sharp above the water, little secret beaches tucked between them. We skirted past Praia da Marinha—Joana called it “the postcard one”—and then Albandeira Beach where the arch cuts right into the sea. She told us local stories about smugglers hiding in these caves ages ago. At one point we just floated for a minute; you could hear gulls echoing off the stone, and I caught myself staring at the colors in the water—kind of green but also gold? Hard to describe. The air cooled fast as we got closer to Benagil Cave.

I’d seen photos of Benagil Cave before (who hasn’t?), but being inside as sunset hit was something else. The light came through that big round hole in the ceiling and turned everyone’s faces orange for a second—one guy tried to take a selfie but dropped his phone (he caught it). Joana laughed and said even locals never get bored of this place. I didn’t expect to feel so quiet in there; maybe it was just everyone holding their breath or maybe it’s that echo you get when waves slap against stone walls. Either way, I still think about that view sometimes.
