The Experience

I didn’t really expect to be nervous until I saw the wetsuit laid out on the sand at Galé Beach. The Atlantic air was salty and a bit chilly, but our instructor João just grinned and said, “It’s perfect for learning today.” He handed me a board that felt heavier than I thought it would—maybe I’m just not used to carrying things this awkward. There were a few of us in the group, mostly beginners like me, and João switched between Portuguese and English so smoothly it made my head spin a little.

We started with this warm-up on the sand—lots of stretching and laughing when someone (okay, me) couldn’t quite copy João’s surfer squat. He talked about ocean safety in this way that made it sound important but not scary. The sun kept ducking behind clouds, which was actually nice because I didn’t want to roast before even getting wet. When we finally paddled out, I could hear kids yelling further down the beach and smell sunscreen mixing with seaweed. That first moment lying belly-down on the board, waiting for a wave, was weirdly peaceful.

Catching a wave is harder than it looks—my arms got tired fast—but João kept shouting encouragement from nearby. I managed to stand up once for about three seconds (felt like ten). He cheered anyway. At one point he tried teaching us how to say “surf” in Portuguese—“surfar”—and Li from our group laughed when I butchered it completely. We all wiped out at least once but nobody seemed to care; there was this easygoing vibe that made failing kind of fun. I still think about that feeling of salt on my lips and sand everywhere after we finished.
