The experience

The first thing I noticed was the salty wind (kind of sharp, but not cold), and how the sand stuck to my feet as we dragged our boards down to Praia da Oura. Our instructor, João, had this sun-faded smile and kept switching between Portuguese and English, sometimes both at once. He showed us how to paddle out and pop up right there on the beach, which looked easy until I actually tried it. There was this kid next to me who nailed it on his first go. I definitely did not.

Paddling into the Atlantic felt heavier than I expected. The wetsuit hugged tight (maybe too tight, but João said that’s normal), and the water tasted like metal. When my turn came, I wiped out immediately: full somersault, swallowed half the ocean. João just laughed and gave me a thumbs-up from the shallows. “Again!” he shouted, so I did. The second time I managed to stand for maybe three seconds before tumbling again, but honestly? That tiny moment felt huge.
