The Experience
The catamaran leaves Albufeira Marina and heads west along the coast, passing the steep golden cliffs of São Rafael Beach and the sheltered cove of Coelha Beach. The boat moves slowly enough that you can see the rock formations and small natural arches carved into the shoreline, and the crew points out the hidden details—caves, coves, the chapel perched on the rocks above Nossa Senhora da Rocha. Castelo Beach, Galé Beach and Salgados Beach come into view as the boat continues, each one framed by different cliff shapes and water colors.
The destination is Benagil Cave, the vast sea cave with a natural dome and a skylight opening that lets sunlight pour onto the golden walls and the water below. The boat enters when conditions permit, and you see it from the water—the scale of the ceiling, the light hitting the stone, the clarity of the water inside. Before heading back east toward the marina, the boat stops for a swim in the open sea, so you can cool off in the water if you want to.
The catamaran has a large top deck and sofa-style seating in the front, so there is room to move and find a view. Snacks and drinks are available to buy on board with cash. The crew speaks English, Spanish and French throughout the tour, and there is a restroom on board. The whole trip—from leaving the marina to returning—takes between 2 hours and 2 hours 45 minutes.
