The Experience

“Try this,” our guide Rui said, handing me a tiny glass of something golden at a farm outside Silves. I’d never tasted medronho before—kind of fiery, but sweet too. The morning had started with us bouncing along red dirt tracks in the Land Rover, windows down, that wild rosemary smell drifting in. Rui would slow down sometimes to point out cork oaks—he showed us how the bark peels off in big chunks, which I didn’t expect to feel so rough under my fingers. There were old stone villages tucked between hills; one woman waved from her doorway as we rolled past. I think she was amused by our muddy tires.
