The Experience

We were already weaving through the Market Square when I realized how much life there is in Wroclaw’s old heart — it’s not just pretty buildings, you know? Our guide, Kasia, kept pausing to point out little things: the way the late gothic City Hall catches the morning light, or how people still meet by that one lamppost (she called it “the spot for first dates and breakups”). The air smelled faintly of coffee and something sweet — maybe pastries from a nearby bakery. I tried to snap a photo but ended up with someone’s elbow in it. Typical.

We wandered over to Salt Square next, where the flower market was in full swing. It was all colors and chatter — women arranging tulips, an old man arguing over carnations. Kasia told us stories about Jaś i Małgosia, these two crooked houses locals call Hansel & Gretel. There’s this archway between them that looks like they’re holding hands. She laughed when I tried to pronounce “Małgosia” — I definitely butchered it. But nobody seemed to mind.

The university campus surprised me — so much baroque gold and marble tucked behind medieval streets. Students rushed past us on their way to class, barely glancing up at the tour group in their city. After that we ducked into a market hall where everything smelled like dill and fresh apples; I almost bought cherries but remembered my pockets were already full of coins from earlier. We ended up on Ostrow Tumski, crossing a bridge covered in padlocks (Kasia said couples leave them for luck). The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist felt quiet inside, even with tourists around — sunlight slanting through tall windows onto stone floors scarred by war. I still think about that silence sometimes.
