itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Visit Auschwitz-Birkenau from Warsaw

  • Pickup from Warsaw hotel
  • Drive to Auschwitz (3.5-4 hours)
  • 3.5-hour guided tour of Auschwitz
  • Guided tour of Birkenau camp
  • Optional lunch stop during return
  • Drive back to Warsaw (3.5-4 hours)

I didn’t sleep much the night before — maybe nerves, or just thinking about what it would mean to actually walk through Auschwitz. Our driver picked us up right at the apartment in Warsaw, early but not too painfully so. The city was still waking up as we left, and I remember the quiet hum of the car and that odd mix of bottled water and morning coffee smells. It’s a long drive — almost four hours — but honestly, it gave me time to brace myself. We stopped for lunch on the way back later, but I barely noticed what I ate.

Arriving at Auschwitz, there’s this hush that settles in before you even get out of the van. Our guide met us at the entrance — she spoke clear English, with that soft Polish lilt. She started by pointing out the sign above the gate (“Arbeit macht frei”), and I felt my stomach twist a bit seeing it in person. The air was cool and damp, even though it wasn’t raining. Inside, everything felt heavier than I expected: old brick walls, gravel crunching underfoot, voices lowered without anyone asking. At one point our guide paused in front of a display case filled with shoes — children’s shoes — and didn’t say anything for a moment. No one did.

Walking through Birkenau later was different somehow — more open sky but colder, if that makes sense. The scale of it is hard to grasp until you’re there; rows of barbed wire stretching off into foggy distance. Someone in our group asked about the train tracks and our guide explained how transports arrived right there. I tried to picture it but couldn’t really. There’s a strange silence except for birds sometimes (I remember hearing crows). On the way back to Warsaw everyone was quieter than before; I kept replaying things in my head, especially those shoes.
