The experience

You'll stand at the ghetto wall remnant: a small section of brick and stone that marks where the boundary once ran, separating the imprisoned from the rest of the city. You'll visit the Jewish Cemetery, established in the early 1800s, where marble and sandstone tombstones reveal carved symbols and the symbolic grave of Janusz Korczak, the famous teacher and writer who died in Auschwitz. You'll walk through the ghetto's streets (Prozna Street, Grzybowski Square), and your guide will explain the geography of confinement: a district of only 2.4 percent of Warsaw's land area where the Germans forced more than 450,000 people to live in crowded conditions starting in October 1940. You'll see the only surviving synagogue of the 400 that existed in Warsaw before the war, now refurbished and functioning again.
