The Experience

The Palace of Culture and Science dominates Warsaw's skyline—a controversial, towering example of 1950s social realism that houses restaurants, theatres, cinemas, concert halls, a university and even a swimming pool across its 3,000 rooms. The interiors are covered in marble and mosaics, lit by enormous windows. After the guided tour, you ride to the 30th-floor terrace for a view across the whole city. The building divides Varsovians: some see it as out of place, others as proof that Warsaw holds room for many kinds of architecture at once.

From there, transport takes you to the POLIN Museum, where multimedia exhibitions show how Poles and Jews lived together, worked together and shaped each other's culture for centuries. The virtual library lets you see Hebrew and Yiddish manuscripts—Talmud, religious and philosophical works—and you can print a page from a 16th-century book on a period press. The museum documents the contribution of Jews to Polish economy, science and culture, and explores the family and neighbourly relations that bound the two communities, alongside the tensions that also existed. It is a substantial part of Warsaw's human history.

A driver and coordinator meet you at your hotel and handle all transport between the two sites and back. The four-hour tour runs with groups of no more than eight in the vehicle, though up to fifteen people can book as one party.
