The experience
Two or three hours on foot through one of Europe's best-preserved medieval town squares: Torun ranks alongside Cracow and Gdansk as a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage site, and the Old Town survived wars that destroyed most Polish cities. The route centers on the Copernicus Trail, tracing the life and times of the astronomer who revolutionized how we understand the cosmos. Your guide leads you through the Market Square, past the Town Hall (a Gothic structure with a tower offering views across the city), and into the Museum House of Nicolaus Copernicus itself: two authentic medieval tenement houses, one believed to be his birthplace.
The 2-hour option covers the Old Town highlights and the Copernicus Monument, a statue that became the city's main symbol. The 3-hour version extends to the Planetarium, a rounded building with interactive equipment about the universe; the Leaning Tower, a 13th-century red-brick structure built as part of Torun's medieval defense system; and the remains of the Teutonic Castle, where you can walk among the impressive stonework and feel the scale of what the Teutonic Knights built centuries ago. The castle grounds now house a Cultural Centre with exhibitions that move you back into medieval times.
Museum entry is included. The 4D movies at the Museum are optional and cost extra. All areas are wheelchair accessible, and the tour suits all fitness levels. Arrive on time: being late may prevent you from joining. Check your email the day before for final details.
