The experience
Stalag Luft III held allied airmen during World War II, and in 1944 more than 70 prisoners attempted a mass escape. The museum displays original items from the camp and a full-size replica of the hut where the men plotted their breakout. You watch a short film and move through the exhibition at your own pace, then travel about half a mile to see the Harry tunnel (one of three tunnels dug by prisoners, named Tom, Dick, and Harry), which now stands as a memorial. A reconstructed guard tower shows how close the tunnel exit came to the German soldiers on patrol.
After the tunnel, you wander through the woods to see the original foundations of the camp scattered across the grounds. The tour is a chance to pay respect to those who died there and to understand the conditions prisoners faced. Private transportation picks you up and returns you, with bottled water provided throughout the 6 to 7 hours.
