The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so much just rolling through Krakow in this funny little electric car. Our guide—Jakub, who had that dry Polish humor—met us right by the hotel. It was early but the city already smelled like fresh bread and rain on stone. We zipped into Old Town first; I kept craning my neck at those faded pastel facades and hearing snippets of music from somewhere (accordion? Maybe). The audio guide switched to English automatically, which was a relief because my Polish is basically nonexistent. I tried to say “Rynek” once and Jakub laughed—apparently I butchered it.

We bumped along towards Wawel Castle next. The castle looked almost unreal in the morning haze—like something out of a storybook but with real people hurrying past, heads down against the drizzle. There was this moment when we paused under some chestnut trees and you could hear church bells echoing off the river. Not dramatic or anything—just quiet and kind of perfect. Then suddenly we were in Kazimierz, the old Jewish Quarter. It felt different there: more graffiti, more cafes, people chatting in doorways. Jakub pointed out a tiny bakery where his grandmother used to buy challah before the war. That stuck with me.

The Ghetto Heroes Square hit me harder than I thought it would—the empty chairs scattered across the square are just… heavy, you know? You don’t need anyone to explain it; you can feel it in your stomach. We finished at Oskar Schindler’s Factory, which still looks industrial and cold from outside but inside it’s all history layered on top of itself. I wandered through for a while after our guide let us off—needed some time alone with those thoughts before heading back.
