The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the echo of our wheels on the cobblestones as we rolled past St. Florian’s Gate — it’s louder than you’d think, almost like the city is clearing its throat for you. Our guide, Piotr (he said to call him Peter if Polish names trip us up), waved at a woman selling flowers near the Main Market Square. She smiled back, tucking her scarf tighter against the wind. The square itself felt huge, pigeons everywhere, and that faint smell of sweet bread drifting from somewhere I couldn’t spot. We slowed down for a minute so I could snap a photo of St. Mary’s Basilica — the light hit those bricks just right.

I didn’t expect to feel so much just passing through Kazimierz. There was this moment outside the Old Synagogue where Piotr told us about his grandmother lighting candles there before the war — he got quiet for a second, and honestly, so did we. The buggy hummed along Szeroka street and I tried (and failed) to pronounce “Remuh” like he did; he laughed and said even locals argue about it. The air in Kazimierz felt different — more layered somehow? Maybe it was all the stories or maybe just the mix of old stone and fresh paint.

We crossed over into what used to be the Ghetto — Ghetto Heroes Square is full of these empty chairs, all facing different ways. Piotr let us out for a bit and I remember touching one; cold metal in my palm, not much to say really. Then on to Schindler’s Factory — didn’t go inside this time but seeing it up close made those history lessons feel heavier. The whole tour only took about an hour and a half but it covered so many sides of Krakow that I still think about that view from under the buggy roof: rain starting up again, people hurrying past with umbrellas, our little group tucked in together listening to someone who knows these streets by heart.
