The experience

Túcume anchors this tour: a site of 26 structures spread across the dry forest of Peru's north coast, of which only Huaca Balsas opens to visitors. You walk through the equatorial forest to reach it, where the guide points out wildlife: owls, woodpeckers, iguanas. Inside the pyramid, thousand-year-old murals show the marine life Peruvian ancestors knew, preserved in the dry climate for a millennium. The site museum sits at a viewpoint overlooking the whole complex, though entry there is optional and arranged with your guide.

The Sicán National Museum holds the richest tombs found in Peru: two royal burials with treasures totaling more than 1,200 kg of gold and jewels. The museum's rooms lay out the region's history, archaeology, geography and nature with accurate dioramas and a dedicated gold room. This complements the better-known Sipán route but reaches deeper into the museums and outdoors most agencies skip.

The tour closes in Lambayeque, the region's old capital, where colonial and republican-era buildings line the streets and squares. You have lunch in a mansion built in 1789 (one of the few agencies offering this), then walk the historic center on foot. The churches and architecture are the most preserved in the region and worth the camera. A professional guide in English or Spanish leads throughout; an air-conditioned vehicle moves between sites; water, coffee and tea are provided; all entry tickets are covered.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What can I actually see inside Huaca Balsas at Túcume?

Huaca Balsas is the one pyramid at Túcume open to visitors, and inside you walk past murals showing marine scenes from about a thousand years ago: figures of fish, nets and water life painted by Peruvian ancestors and still visible on the walls.

How much treasure is in the Sicán National Museum?

The Sicán National Museum holds two royal tombs. One contains more than 1,200 kg of gold, jewels and extraordinary objects, and the other is the largest tomb found in this part of Peru. Both are on display with dioramas explaining the history and geography of the region.

Where do we eat lunch, and what is it like?

Lunch happens in a mansion built in 1789 in the historic center of Lambayeque (one of the few places offering this experience), and the house itself is an example of colonial architecture worth photographing. The food is good and the setting is part of the tour.

What wildlife might we see at Túcume?

The walk to Huaca Balsas passes through a dry forest where you have a chance to spot owls, woodpeckers, iguanas and other wildlife from the equatorial dry forest ecosystem.

Is this tour good for someone who has already done the Sipán route?

Yes, this tour reaches corners of Chiclayo that other agencies do not show and complements Sipán well. Although Túcume is less famous, the museums and outdoor sites are more interesting and the colonial Lambayeque experience is unique to this itinerary.
