The experience
The tour starts at your hotel in Chiclayo and heads north to Pómac Forest Historic Sanctuary, a protected forest of carob trees where the Sicán civilization built dozens of pyramids between 750 and 1300 AD. Your guide walks you through the site, explaining how this culture descended from the Moche and how the forest came to sit on the grounds of what was once the Batan Grande sugar cane hacienda. The pyramids themselves are spread across the landscape rather than clustered, so you move between them on foot with the guide pointing out the structures and the history embedded in them.
After Pómac Forest, the tour moves to the Sicán National Museum, where the artifacts excavated from the tombs are displayed. The centerpiece is the funeral mask of the Lord of Sicán (made of feathers, gold and silver) along with the objects buried with him and an illustration showing how he was positioned in his tomb. The museum gives shape to what you saw in the forest: the pyramids become tombs, and the scale of the Sicán elite's wealth and ritual becomes concrete.
