Sandboarding near Lima: 4x4 desert dunes and instruction
Learn to sandboard, then ride the dunes at your own pace
A half-day sandboarding activity in the Chilca desert 65 km south of Lima, departing from central Lima districts with 4x4 transport and a specialized instructor. You'll start with instruction on the gentlest slopes, then progress to steeper terrain and free riding once you're ready.
The experience
The tour starts with pickup from Miraflores, San Isidro, Surco or Barranco, then heads south to Chilca. On the way, the driver deflates the truck tires slightly so the 4x4 can grip the sand properly. The first 30 minutes are spent driving through a predetermined circuit of dunes: rises and falls designed to build your comfort with the terrain before you step off to sandboard.
Once you reach the sandboarding area, an instructor takes you through the basics on the gentlest hill. You'll learn the fundamentals at a beginner level, then move to steeper slopes as your confidence grows. The progression goes through three stepped hills, each one more demanding than the last. After the structured lessons, you have free time to ride however you want: pushing yourself further or staying on the slopes that feel right.
The package includes the sandboard, helmet and gloves, plus bottled water and a first aid kit. The 4x4 vehicle carries SOAT insurance. Guides speak English or Spanish, and children from age 5 are welcome. The whole experience runs about six hours from pickup to return.
