The experience

The day starts with a 4x4 pickup from your hotel, hostel or Airbnb at 7 am: early enough to beat Lima's traffic on the 30-minute drive south to Punta Hermosa. That neighborhood sits on the coast where the ocean breeze hits hard and the atmosphere shifts from city to beach life. Once you arrive, you get a short briefing on what the next four hours will hold, and the real part begins: riding through sand dunes of different sizes and difficulty levels in the 4x4 itself, up and down terrain in the middle of nowhere with plenty of room to stop for pictures.

After the ride, you move to the boards. You start on smaller dunes and work up to the larger ones, with the guide alongside you the whole time: shooting photos and video while you're riding. Sandboards, boots, bindings and helmet are all supplied. Bring sunscreen and water beyond what's provided (bottled water and fruit are included), and wear clothes that can handle sand. The guide speaks English or Spanish depending on your preference.

This is not a sightseeing tour with stops at landmarks. It's a full-day activity built around the doing: the sensation of the board under your feet and the terrain changing as you move down the dunes. The 4x4 section is part of the experience itself, not just transport to it.
