The Experience
You're picked up from your Lima hotel or hostel in the morning and travel by luxury bus to Paracas, a coastal town south of the capital. The bus has reclining seats, USB ports, a clean bathroom and air conditioning for the drive. Breakfast should be eaten before pickup; bring your original passport, as it's required for highway checkpoints and medical treatment if needed. A certified guide in English meets you in Paracas and stays with the group for the rest of the day.
The first stop is La Caravedo Vineyard, the oldest in the Americas, where Pisco—Peru's national spirit—has been produced for centuries. You'll tour the vineyard, taste Pisco samples, and sit down to a main course lunch with passion fruit juice; vegetarian and vegan options are available. Then the group heads to Huacachina, a small oasis town ringed by towering sand dunes, where you have free time to walk around, photograph the lagoon, or grab a drink before the main event.
The dune buggy tour lasts two hours. A driver operates the vehicle for safety, and you ride as a passenger while the buggy races down the dunes at high speed—the adrenaline is the point. At the top of the dunes, you can take photos or grab an artisanal sandboard to slide down on your stomach. Helmets and safety gear are provided for both the buggy and sandboarding; Lima Experience is the only operator in Huacachina that supplies helmets as standard, meeting international safety standards. As the sun begins to set, the group heads to a private spot on the dunes for a picnic and to watch the desert turn gold and red. You're back in Lima by late evening.
