The Experience

First thing I noticed stepping out in Cusco was the thin air — you feel it right away, even before sunrise. Our van rolled through sleepy streets and then out into the Valle Sur, the sky just starting to lighten. By the time we reached Cusipata, my stomach was rumbling (maybe nerves too). Breakfast at Lupita’s was simple but warm — eggs, bread, coca tea. The kind of meal that makes you feel like you’re actually in Peru, not just passing through.

The real climb started after that. Our guide, Maribel, kept checking on us — “slow and steady,” she said, showing us how to breathe so we wouldn’t get dizzy at altitude. I could see Ausangate way off in the distance, its snow almost glowing against the gray morning. The path was dusty and sometimes slippery underfoot; I kept stopping to catch my breath and look around. There were locals herding alpacas along the trail — one old man nodded at me and grinned when I tried out my terrible Quechua greeting. He laughed; I laughed too.

The colors of Vinicunca don’t hit all at once. It’s more like they sneak up on you as you walk — first a hint of red or green in the rock, then suddenly you’re standing at 5,000 meters and it’s all stripes and silence except for wind and people whispering “wow” under their breath. I took about a hundred photos but none really caught it. My hands were freezing but I didn’t care much — there’s something about being up there that makes everything else fade out for a while.

Coming down felt easier (maybe just relief). Back in Cusipata we had lunch — soup, rice with chicken, some sweet dessert I still can’t pronounce. Everyone looked tired but happy; Maribel joked that we’d earned our meal today. On the drive back to Cusco I watched the mountains slip by outside the window and thought about how different they look up close compared to postcards or Instagram — rougher, quieter somehow.

What’s included
