The experience

The van picked me up in Cusco when it was still dark out. I barely managed coffee before our guide, Diego, waved us in. The drive south was mostly quiet, everyone half-asleep or staring at the windows. It’s funny how the city lights fade so quickly into those empty Andean hills. By the time we reached Cusipata, the sun had started to spill over the rooftops and there was this sharp smell of cold grass mixed with wood smoke. The ride itself is half the fun. When we finally parked near Lauramani, I could feel how thin the air was (5,000 meters is no joke). The colors of Vinicunca looked almost unreal under that harsh morning light: stripes of red and yellow and turquoise that didn’t seem possible until you’re standing right there. Diego explained how minerals did all this over millions of years but I barely heard him. I just kept staring at the horizon where Red Valley stretched out like Mars. It was quieter than I expected up there. Just wind and some distant voices.

Lunch back in Cusipata tasted better than breakfast somehow (maybe because we’d actually earned it by then). On the drive home everyone was quieter again but in a different way: tired but kind of buzzing inside.
