The Experience

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a Lima walking tour. We started in Miraflores—our guide, Ana, handed us bus tickets and tossed out a few Spanish phrases (I tried “gracias” with my best accent; she grinned politely). The city felt alive even before we reached the historic center. Riding the public bus was a little chaotic but honestly kind of fun—people chatting, windows open, that mix of sea air and exhaust you only get in big cities. It made everything feel more real than just being shuttled around in a van.

We got off near Plaza San Martín and strolled down Jirón de la Unión. The colonial balconies overhead looked like they’d seen centuries of stories. Ana pointed out tiny details—like how some buildings still have bullet marks from protests decades ago. I kept getting distracted by the street vendors selling churros (the smell—warm sugar and fried dough—kept following us). At one point, an old man tipped his hat at our group; Ana said he’s been there for years selling lottery tickets. It’s those tiny moments that stick.

The Central Market was loud in the best way—vendors shouting prices, colors everywhere, fruit I couldn’t name even after Ana repeated them twice (“lucuma,” she said—I probably butchered it). She let us taste slices of mango that were somehow both sweet and tart at once. Someone tried to sell me a bag of dried corn; I almost bought it just because he winked at me like we were old friends. That market energy is hard to describe unless you’re right there in it.

Our last stop was the San Francisco Monastery. The cool stone inside felt like stepping into another world after the heat outside. The catacombs were quieter than I expected—not spooky exactly, but definitely gave me goosebumps. Ana told stories about Lima’s past that made the whole place feel heavier somehow. I still think about those echoing footsteps underground.
