The Experience
We hopped on the big red tourist bus right outside Larcomar, that mall perched like it’s floating above the cliffs in Miraflores. The sea breeze was stronger than I expected up there—my hair kept blowing into my mouth while I tried to listen to our guide, Carla. She pointed out the glass “chimneys” in the park (I’d never noticed them before) and told us about how this whole area used to be just parkland. The city sort of folds into itself here—modern shops above, ancient ruins below. We rolled past Huaca Pucllana, which looks almost out of place among all the apartment buildings, but somehow it fits.
The ride to Lima’s center was louder than I thought it’d be—horns, vendors calling out snacks at intersections, a bit of salsa leaking from someone’s phone behind me. When we finally stepped off near Plaza San Martín, the sun was already starting to dip behind those old white facades. Carla led us through Jirón de la Unión, where you get this mix of perfume shops and old wooden balconies that creak when people lean over them. There was a wedding party taking photos in front of the Cathedral; their laughter echoed off the stones. I tried to imagine Francisco Pizarro walking here—Carla said he actually carried beams for the first cathedral himself. Not sure why that stuck with me.
We ended at Santo Domingo Monastery, which smells faintly of old paper and incense when you walk in. The library is something else—dusty sunlight through high windows and rows of books that look like they haven’t moved in decades. Our group went quiet for a minute there; even Carla just let us wander. On the way back to Miraflores I realized I’d barely checked my phone—except maybe for a photo or two—and honestly, that felt pretty good.
