The Experience

Right outside the Starbucks in Barranco, I met our guide—Luis, who grew up just a few blocks away. The air was cool, with that salty hint from the Pacific, and you could hear music drifting from a nearby bar. We started strolling down those colorful streets, past murals and old wooden balconies, dodging the odd cyclist or two.

Our first stop was a tiny cebichería tucked behind a yellow-painted wall. The chef handed us small plates of ceviche—sharp lime, crunchy corn, and just enough chili to wake you up. Luis explained how his grandmother used to make it every Sunday. We moved on to try anticuchos from a street vendor; smoky beef heart skewers sizzling right there on the grill. The smell alone made my stomach rumble.

We wandered through Barranco’s backstreets, popping into a cozy café for causa rellena (potato layered with avocado and chicken), then onto an old-school tavern for lomo saltado—beef stir-fried with onions and tomatoes. Each place had its own story; one owner even showed us her family recipe book, pages stained from years of use. For dessert? A slice of homemade suspiro limeño—sweet, creamy, and honestly, I could’ve eaten two.
